Design Updates

Our design is now three years old. We would normally be well into a full redesign by now but the university is pursuing a university-wide redesign and we do not want to invest time in work which will be supplanted by that effort. Instead, we are making incremental changes to our current design. Little changes can do a great deal of work, as you'll see in the current round of changes to typography, spacing, and shadow treatments.

The updated fonts are larger and clearer. There is more white space overall. We removed many of the dividing lines between elements on the pages, notably in the left-hand navigation. The main page area is no longer presented as a faux piece of paper floating over a grey background. Likewise, we've removed the shadows on embedded images.

We would like to thank the people who gave us feedback as we worked on these designs, especially Craig Zaccaro, who has been a part of the process throughout. And big thanks to the folks who came to last week's user group meeting to give the designs a final review. As we work through the upcoming changes to the home pages and the program brochures, we will continue to ask our user group participants for their advice and feedback.
