The Newsletter Tool

The newsletter tool allows you to build newsletters and newsletter issues from CHSSWeb content and to publish issues by email and on your web sites.
A newsletter in CHSSWeb consists of these pieces:
- Newsletter. This is the publication. It contains the branding elements such as the newsletter's title and its typical design and structure. You only create a particular newsletter once and then publish issues of that newsletter.
- Newsletter issue. This is a particular issue of the newsletter. It has its own content, including introductory text, category headers, and category introductions. It can also contain associated content in the form of CHSSWeb articles and events.
There is some room for confusion here. In daily life, we refer to a single issue of a newsletter as a newsletter. If you find yourself creating multiple newsletters with one issue each, please talk with the CHSSWeb team.
Using the Newsletter Tool
The newsletter tool is available to websites in the CHSSWeb content management system.
The newsletter tool is best suited for newsletters if:
- you plan to use content from your website to build your newsletter
- you are sending communication within the George Mason University community
- you plan to use listservs to manage your recipients
If you plan on creating newsletter-specific content that you don't want to display on your website, plan to send to a high volume of recipients or recipients external to George Mason or need the functionality of an enterprise CRM system, you might want to consider other options. The university has an enterprise license for Emma, administered through the Office of University Branding, which may be a better option for these types of uses.
We are happy to discuss your specific communication needs and help you find the right solution.
Also, please note, that the university has specific requirements around sending mass communication to alumni or prospective students. If you are aiming to reach these audiences, please contact us and we can help connect you with the right group to discuss your project.
