Build a better event page

The CHSSWeb Events application allows you to create a web page to publish and promote your event online. Creating and publishing events on your site helps demonstrate that your department, program, or center is vibrant and active.

To make the greatest impact, focus on creating high-quality event pages by following a few simple best practices.

Event title

When creating an event title, limit it to 110 characters. Otherwise, the title will be truncated on event listings pages. Ideally, you might want to keep the title to about half that length so it displays as only two lines over the image on your home page and the event listings pages.

Although you can use the maximum number of characters allowed, consider how it will appear on the page. If you need a longer title on the event page, but want a shorter version to appear on the event listings pages or your home page, you can use the “Short title” field to override the title.

You may use the maximum number of characters for the event title but consider how it may obscure the image (above).
This event title is short enough that most of the event listing image remains visible (above).

Event images

Event list images (event card)

When adding an image in the “Attach Image for Event Lists” field, make sure it is:

  • Square (1:1 ratio)
  • At least 600 x 600 pixels
  • Free of any text
  • A simple, visually appealing image or graphic

Rather than using a full event flyer for this space, try selecting one visually-appealing piece of the flyer and cropping it to a square for the event lists image.

An event flyer has been uploaded as the image for the event above for event lists.
One aspect of the event flyer has been cropped to a square and uploaded to the event above .

If you do not upload an event listing image, an image of the selected building will be displayed. If a building image is not available, a default image will appear.

The image shown above is the default event listing image that appears when a building image is not available.

You may use any of these generic event listings images from the CHSS Creative resources site. New ones will be added periodically.

Event details page image

When adding an image in the field “Attach Image for Event Details Page,” make sure the image:

  • Is at least 250px wide
  • Does not contain text
  • Complements the event but does not include the event details

Do not use an event flyer as the event image. Instead, enter all event details as text on the event page, and upload a decorative image to the Event Details page. Decorative images can help reinforce your event's theme while keeping the page accessible, easy to read, and visually appealing.

None of the copy in this event flyer (above) is accessible and most will not be legible on mobile.
Place all information about the event (above) in the copy and use an image that complements the event details.

Some ideas for event images that complement the event details include:

  • Headshot of the featured speaker, guest, host, etc.
    Event logo or graphic

Event details: date, time, location

As long as you have correctly entered the event details in the CHSSWeb Admin Tool, the event's date, time, and location automatically appear on the event details page. There is no need to enter this information elsewhere, as doing so will create redundant content.

URL description and URL link

The information entered in these fields appears in the right column of the event details page and is commonly used for links to additional resources, such as a registration form.

Share your event

Let other CHSSWeb editors know about your event! Sharing your event with other CHSSWeb editors can expand its reach and help increase attendance.

Please remember that images uploaded for either the event listings page or the event details page should not contain text or event details. Text embedded in images can be difficult to read on different screen sizes and is not accessible to all users.
