Maintenance, QR Codes, and Other Tips
Please set aside time to clean up your expired bulletins and media on a regular basis.
Over time, your sign will accumulate content you no longer need, especially old bulletins and media (images) used in old bulletins. If contributors do not set end dates for their bulletins, you will also accumulate published bulletins which will appear on your signs but which will be out of date.
Tips
- Name your bulletins well (descriptive title - your name, your unit). This will help us all work better in this shared environment.
- Using a descriptive title for your bulletin also helps with accessibility. (E.g. "RELI 399: Development of Hell" is better than "Course Ad")
- Descriptive titles are very important if you use a template that has no template text. For instance if your bulletin consists of a single image, there will be no accessibility text; viewers using the accessibility site will have to rely on your title.
- Always set an expiration date unless you plan for a bulletin to remain published indefinitely.
- Deleting media does not affect bulletins which use that media, so you will not damage your published bulletins if you accidentally delete an image that is being used.
- Likewise, deleting templates does not affect bulletins which were created from that template.
QR Codes
When possible, include a QR code that directs the viewer to more information. We currently automatically include QR codes for events, and we will be adding more QR code generation to CHSSWeb in the future.
Until then, you can use the CHSSWeb URL shortener or an outside QR code generator to create a code. The CHSSWeb shortener makes it easy for you to add google campaign tracking information, which can you use to see what web traffic you get from your bulletin.
