Documents and Multimedia

Documents

Documents uploaded to your website must meet accessibility standards. George Mason's Assistive Technology Initiative (ATI) has resources to help you create accessible documents.

When thinking about documents on the web, it is important to consider if a document actually belongs on your website where it is available to the world and searchable on Google and other search engines. George Mason has internal services for storing and sharing documents. These are the appropriate places to store or archive documents that are not for a broader audience on the web.

If you determine that a document does need to be available on your website, make sure that it meets accessibility standards or, at a minimum, that an accessible version can be provided upon request.

At the start of each semester, the CHSSWeb team sends a report to the website contact for each site with a full list of the documents uploaded on their website. This report can be used to identify documents that may be out of date, no longer needed or shouldn't be available on the website so that they can be removed.

Multimedia

Multimedia content embedded on your website must have the following:

  1. Transcript (required for audio-only content like podcasts, strongly encouraged but not required for video content)
  2. Synchronized, accurate captions
  3. Audio descriptions (required when the visual imagery is important to understanding the content presented in the video)

George Mason's Assistive Technology Initiative (ATI) provides captioning and transcript services as well as resources for creating accessible multimedia content. More information on ATI's services and resources is available on their website.
