Degree List Pages

Degree List Pages Image

This section contains two fields: Short Description and Medium Description.

The Short Description holds the short, promotional text that appears with your program when it is listed on the college's program listing. It should be short, compelling, and entice potential students to click through to learn more about your program.

The Medium Description holds the short summary that appears on degree list pages on any other site on which the program appears. This description should be quite short, a sentence or two, though the specifics may vary based on your needs. Look at your site's program listings and use the field in a way that works in that context. It should be promotional, encouraging the viewer to seek more information about the program and should not restate requirements and suchlike unless there is a promotional purpose in doing so. Make sure that the text on the Degree List Page works well with the Program Overview text.

How Are Degree List Pages Used?

Department and program websites have a webpage that lists all the academic programs offered by that unit. We call this a "Degree List Page." Some units have two Degree List Pages, one for graduate programs and a second for undergraduate programs. The link to Degree List Pages is in the main navigation for most sites. Sites that represent a small number of degrees may forego list pages altogether and include their program links in their main navigation.

There are a number of options for setting up degree listings. Please work with the CHSSWeb team to set up listing pages that work for you.

On most websites, the Degree List Pages are generated automatically from the Programs application. This means that all of the degree names and descriptions are pulled directly from the Program application. This information is updated automatically as new degrees are added or degree names are changed. If you find yourself creating degree pages manually by putting degree information into the page text, please stop and talk to the CHSSWeb team about your options.

Though the degree list is generated automatically, editors can add additional information to the page.

  • a top text area above the list of degrees
  • an additional text area in the right sidebar
  • a content block at the end of the list of degrees
  • events
  • brief promotional text to accompany each degree

The sections below explain how to edit the automatically generated Degrees List Pages. This page (or pages) has different names on different sites, so you'll have to know the name of your Degrees List Page(s). Frequently used names:  Degrees, Degrees and Certificates, Graduate Programs (or Degrees), Undergraduate Programs (or Degrees). These pages are generally near the top of the list of pages and sections.

Adding or Changing the Top Text Area

Follow these steps to add or change short introductory text to the top of the Degrees List Page.

From the Pages View

  1. Click on the Edit button of the Degree List Page you want to edit.
  2. In the Edit Page Information Box, add or edit the text in the Main Content window. Be sure to use "Paste from Text" if you are cutting and pasting a text from Word.
  3. Save and review on the public-facing site.

Adding information to the Right Sidebar

You can add additional information to the right sidebar of the Degrees List Page.

From the Pages View

  1. Click on the Edit button of the Degree List Page you want to edit.
  2. In the Edit Page Information Box, add or edit the text in the Additional Text window. Be sure to use "Paste from Text" if you are cutting and pasting a text from Word.
  3. Save and review on the public-facing site.

This information appears in the right side bar. There is no automatic heading for the sidebar on this page.

Keep in Mind

  • If you want to create a heading, use H2 from the formating drop down menu.
  • Use Paragraph from the formating drop down menu for regular text.
  • Keep information very brief as it will appear in a narrow sidebar.
  • Check your work to see how it looks and reads.

Adding a Content Block with Additional Information

If there is additional information you want to add to the Degrees List Page, you can do that by creating a content block and adding it to the page. Remember first you need to create the block using the link on the left of the editing window. Then you need to add that block to the page. From the Edit Page window, scroll down to the Associated Research Groups on the bottom right and click on "Show Blocks".

Some ways we have used a content block on the Degrees page:

  • to list (and link to) the interdisciplinary minors that the department is affiliated with
  • to list (and link to) concentrations, which are currently not automatically added to the Degrees page
  • to describe honors in the major, which is currently not automatically added to the Degrees page

Please contact us with help in creating a content block if this is new to you.

Adding Events to the Right Sidebar

From the Pages View

  1. Click on the Edit button of the Degree List Page you want to edit.
  2. In the Template Settings box on the right, check the "Display events" box.
  3. Save and check on public-facing website.
