Event Categories
Site owners may choose to organize their site's events into categories associated with their site. The event categories currently available are listed to the right. If your site has event categories, they will appear in alphabetical order in the event section's navigation. Take a look at the listing of events on the CHSS site, which lists Research events and offers navigation to events categorized as “Faculty”, "Academic Calendar", and "Research", as well as uncategorized events.
If you have event categories associated with your site, you may choose one category for each event that originates on your site, or you can leave the category blank. Categorized events will appear on the list page for their selected category. All events, including uncategorized events, will appear on the "All Upcoming" list page.
You may also associate an event category with a page. The effect of this depends on what template the page is using, but in general the page will display the most recent one or more events in that category. This gives you the option of set-and-forget pages which always display the most recent event or events relevant to that page.
Event categories are similar in most ways to article categories. However, since events are date-driven, you should give extra consideration before deciding to add an event category to your site. If you are likely to have periods of time when there are no events in that event category, visitors will see an empty list and get the impression that you are not active in that area.
If you wish to learn how these categories can highlight and organize your events, and change the categories that are available on your site, please contact the CHSSWeb team.
